Canstruction
December 18 – RCS students delivered an incredible 1,934 pounds of food to Feeding Westchester in December, and they had fun in the process. The fifth through ninth graders were asked to bring canned foods (or other non-perishables) to their homerooms or advisories, and then were challenged to a Canstruction competition.
Important competition information:
- The floor space for each group was a 10x10 foot square.
- All donated items could be used, as well as any additional items that would add to the design. For example, cans could be stacked around the exterior of a box to make the structure look like it was made entirely of cans.
- No tape or glue allowed!
Canstruction proved to be a great community gathering of engineering and creativity. As a result of their Canstruction success, faculty judges awarded the following homerooms:
In a tie for third place – Ms. Finnigan-Allen’s homeroom, for their Bulldoze World Hunger creation, and Mr. Smee’s homeroom, for Eat, Learn, Play.
In second place – Ms. Baker’s homeroom, for their American flag creation.
And the winning entry, for the second year in a row – Ms. Smith’s homeroom for their amazingly realistic pumpkin pie!
“Congrats to all winners,” Head of Upper Campus Matt Hall said, “but more importantly, congratulations to everyone here for their generosity and awareness of the issue of food insecurity in the Westchester community.”
