Mike will begin his tenure with the 2026-27 school year.
After an extensive national search, Rippowam Cisqua School is proud to announce the appointment of Mike Schloat as its next Head of School, effective July 2026.
Mike is currently the Head of School at The Bement School in Deerfield, Massachusetts. A passionate educator and visionary leader, Mike brings over 20 years of experience in independent schools as a teacher, coach, administrator, and community builder.
During his tenure at Bement, Mike led the school through a period of impressive growth. Enrollment increased, the Second Century Campaign was launched, and Bement experienced record-setting success in institutional advancement, including best-ever totals in annual giving and family participation.
Prior to Bement, Mike spent 12 years at Deerfield Academy, where, in addition to teaching English, coaching, and living in the dormitory, he served in a variety of leadership roles, including Assistant Dean of Faculty, Chair of the English Department, and Interim Director of Research, Innovation, and Outreach. He also designed a new residential curriculum and led a schoolwide cultural shift toward collaboration and innovation, including the creation of Deerfield’s first “Open Classroom Week.”
Earlier in his career, Mike taught English and held leadership roles at Blair Academy, where he served as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and dormitory Housemaster.
“A teacher at heart with a passion for creating joy for students, Mike is a warm, fun, and insightful leader who exemplifies the values of Rippowam Cisqua School,” Search Committee Chair Amy Harsch said. “The members of the Search Committee were struck by Mike’s dedication to balancing continuity and tradition with change and innovation.”
A native of Mount Kisco and a graduate of Fox Lane, Mike began his teaching career at RCS in 2001 after earning his B.A. in English from Williams College and M.A. in Private School Leadership from the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Now, nearly 25 years later, Mike is returning to RCS — and to Bedford — with his wife and two teenage sons. A lover of learning, sports, and the outdoors, Mike embodies the energy, curiosity, and community spirit that define RCS.
In accepting the role, Mike shared his excitement for the School’s future: “More than ever, young people and their families need schools like RCS — places where kindness, joy, and curiosity do not take a backseat to achievement, and where the commitment to community is authentic and core to the experience for all. I am inspired and humbled by the opportunity to lead such a school, and my family and I are thrilled to be joining the RCS and Bedford communities at such an exciting moment in the school’s history.”
We are thrilled to welcome Mike back home and look forward to the exciting chapter ahead under his leadership.
