Innovation and Technology

At RCS, we are engaged in 21st century skills everyday in the lab, library, and classroom. Whether it’s being used to connect students with their peers around the world, to spark creativity, reinforce skills, design a presentation, or publish the student newspaper, technology is being thoughtfully integrated into each student’s RCS experience.

RCS’ thoughtful integration of technology into the curriculum helps familiarize students with computer science, engineering and innovation. Beyond general computer usage, teachers integrate coding, robotics, 3D printing and more into meaningful and relevant projects that rely heavily on a student’s core competencies in science, math and English.

PreKindergarten - Grade 4

The technology program on the RCS lower campus emphasizes the use of computers and other devices as tools for learning. Classes in the computer lab introduce students to specific skills required for academic tasks, such as word processing, presentations and research. Responsible and ethical use of technology is an ongoing topic, approached in developmentally appropriate ways throughout the grades. Coding and elementary robotics are another part of the curriculum and students have opportunities to explore a variety of coding apps, including Scratch, Jr. and Scratch. Bee-bots and Pro-bots provide hands-on exploration of robotics. Beyond the computer lab, Smart projectors, laptops and iPads in the classrooms and library give students the power to create, to communicate and to extend their learning across the curriculum.

Grades 5 - 9

There are two computer labs on the Upper Campus, each housing twenty-two Mac desktop computers, and in science lab A there are 13 Mac desktop computers. In addition, throughout the building there are 70 Mac laptops and 30 iPads available for teacher and student use. Throughout the day, teachers may schedule their class to work in one of the labs, reserve a laptop cart to be used in their classrooms, or reserve the iPads to be used in their classrooms. There are many software programs available for student use including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Other educational programs include: Inspiration, Comic Life, Geometer’s Sketchpad, Google SketchUp, ACSLogo, Chipmunk Basic, Photoshop Elements, Google Earth, iMovie, Pages, Keynote, GarageBand, and Audacity. Teachers and students also use many internet based software programs such as Google Docs, Typing Ace, Glogster, Scratch, VoiceThread, Prezi and EasyBib.
