Foundations of Education Series Lecture - Beyond the Headlines: What Your Child Is Really Doing on Social Media

Is your child’s face always six inches from the screen? Are you worried that social media is influencing their well-being?

Many parents are struggling to keep up with the various ways that teens are engaging online and how to ensure their kids become responsible digital citizens. On Thursday, May 17, Dr. Emily Weinstein will join our community to talk “beyond the headlines” about teens and their social media use.

Since before the existence of Snapchat, Dr. Weinstein has studied how adolescents experience daily life with social media. Dr. Weinstein is a postdoctoral fellow at Project Zero, a research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a visiting research scientist at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Boston. During her talk, Dr. Weinstein will share insights from her research that will challenge our assumptions and answer the following questions:

  • How can I even begin to understand all the things kids are doing on social media?
  • How can I help my teen build an online life that supports – rather than detracts – from their well-being?
  • Should I (attempt to) keep my teen off social media completely?
  • Are there skills I can help my kids cultivate to equip them for digital life?
  • Where can I start when it feels like my kids are dealing with issues that are totally foreign to me?
Parents will leave her lecture with a better understanding of how to navigate this “new” terrain and how to support teens in their everyday experiences with social media apps.
