Investigating DNA Clues

RCS sixth graders learn science by doing it. Hands-on work with authentic lab tools lets them think like scientists: asking questions, analyzing data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. It also builds skills and confidence while connecting science to medicine, forensics, and public health.

At the Regeneron DNA Learning Center, RCS sixth graders investigate DNA fingerprinting and antibiotic resistance. In the DNA fingerprinting lab, students examine the genetic variation that makes each person’s DNA unique and learn how forensic scientists use it to identify individuals. They cut DNA samples with restriction enzymes, separate the fragments by agarose gel electrophoresis, and compare the banding patterns from suspects and crime scene evidence to solve a simulated case.

In the Bacteria and Antibiotics lab, students take on the role of microbiologists. They culture bacteria in Petri dishes and run antibiotic sensitivity tests, measuring how different antibiotics affect bacterial growth. Through these investigations, they learn how scientists study the growing public health challenge of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.”
