Author Stephen Chbosky Visits RCS

Stephen Chbosky visits RCS ninth graders to talk about his 1999 novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

On Wednesday, October 13 Stephen Chbosky visited RCS ninth graders in English class via Zoom to talk about The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which was one of their required summer reads. In addition to being a novelist, Mr. Chbosky is also a director, screenwriter, and producer. His most recent project is as director of the film adaptation of the Broadway smash hit Dear Evan Hansen. Mr. Chbosky also directed the 2017 film Wonder, and he co-wrote the screenplay for the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast

In advance of their meeting with Mr. Chbosky, the ninth graders prepared dozens of questions to ask him, capitalizing on his willingness to “answer anything!” The ninth graders’ questions ranged from “How do you effectively write a character that you don’t empathize with?” and “What is the worst and what is the best thing anyone’s ever said about your work?” to “What’s your favorite book other than your own books?” and “Have any of your projects changed your view on human psychology?”

Ninth grader Juliana Zahorjan reflected on the experience, “I have never been given the chance to speak with the ‘other side’ of a book in such depth. It was super interesting to see how the author Stephen Chbosky related to his novel, and how it inspired him to do other projects.”
