Gathering in the Greek Agora

March 5 – In ancient Greece, a city-state’s Agora was the center of political, athletic, rhetorical, and artistic life – a public place where citizens shared themselves and their ideas with the world.

Last Thursday, sixth graders turned the Playhouse into their own Agora and showed RCS parents how much they’ve learned about ancient Greek history. Dressed in togas and crowned with laurel wreaths, they used their public speaking skills to share information about a personal study topic – a skill that is no less important today than in ancient Greece. Students also shared hand-made art projects, essays, and other presentations to bring their topics to life.

RCS sixth graders study ancient history to understand how place- and time-specific customs and beliefs affect our modern world. They examine how geography affects the growth of civilization, how people develop systems of government, how economic systems progress, and why beliefs and values have evolved. This is all part of becoming active, thinking citizens in our own complex society.
