Classical Music Morning

February 28 – Violas, violins, and cellos! The Upper School’s Friday morning concert series continued with a string ensemble performance that parents and friends thought was a magical way to start the day.

“They’re all improving and growing,” Upper School strings teacher Carrie Brandt said about the fifth through eighth grade musicians. “They were very excited to show everyone what they’d been working on.”

The 16 students and three teachers presented two very different pieces – Coro by Handel, and The Great Gate of Kiev by Moussorgsky.

With so many fifth graders in the group, Coro was a great way for students to connect as an ensemble and work on getting a strong sound together.

“They really liked Coro,” Mrs. Brandt said. “It’s joyful and majestic.”

And The Great Gate of Kiev by Russian composer Modest Moussorgsky gave the musicians an opportunity to work on getting a big sound.

Mrs. Brandt is delighted with all that the students have accomplished so far this year. She pointed out that for some in the group, it was their first time to perform in a string ensemble. For others, it has been a good opportunity to work on technique. And there is a definite improvement in musicianship.

“And I also see new friendships forming in the string ensemble,” the strings teacher said. “That’s really something special to see.”
