The Hoot Gets the Scoop!

January 17  Fourth graders on the staff of our school newspaper, The Hoot, are always looking for a good story. So when they discovered that bestselling author Janet Wong would be on campus for an assembly, they decided to ask for an interview.
Here’s their story!

Janet S. Wong – Speaker, Author, and Poet
By Sophie Slocum, Millie Brown, and Taylor Robinson

On Friday, January 17, author Janet Wong came to visit our school and speak to the students about the many children’s books and poems she wrote. We had the pleasure of interviewing her and here is what Janet Wong shared with us.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
“I always wanted to be a fashion designer. I would draw dresses all the time.”

When did you first realize you wanted to be an author?
“I was in a bookstore shopping for books for my baby cousin’s birthday and I wanted all the books for myself! I realized that somebody must have written those books. At that moment, I knew this is what I want to do for a living.”

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
“I have written over 200 books and I don’t have a favorite. Each book is different!”

How long does it take to write a book?
“For a short book it would take an hour or so but it depends on the kind of book. For a long book, it would take about a year like some of my long poetry books.”

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
“It differs. Every day is different. Some days I speak at schools. I love to meet kids and tell them about my books. My least favorite part is waking up early.”

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
“I get my ideas from lots of places. For example, one of the books I wrote is called Alex and the Chess Club. I was inspired by my son, who played chess as a young child.”
