Identity and Leadership: The Reason for Ropes

September 10 – “They started on some of the lower challenges,” Grade 9 Dean Chris Perry said. “But one of the instructors showed them how to clip in and clip out; then they were moving through the trees.”
Mr. Perry was describing the ninth graders’ first Learning Immersion Day (LID), a trip to a ropes course built in the trees of Purchase, New York. There were mental and physical challenges to figure out. Balance, strength, and cheering each other on all played a part.

“Some kids would be stuck,” Mr. Perry explained. “And a friend would talk them through it. They were a good distance up in the trees!”

This is the first in a series of hands-on, experiential learning trips that the ninth graders will embark upon this year – discovering more about themselves and each other. The themes this year are identity (both personal and group) and leadership. This shared experience to Boundless Adventures (the site of the ropes course) served as an opportunity for the students to bond as a group. All the LIDs provide them with experiences so they begin to see themselves as the Class of 2020 and as leaders.
