Election Day
November 6 – Lower Campus students got a taste for the democratic election process when they voted in class on Tuesday – for dessert.
The dessert choices were:
- Ice cream sandwiches
- Cherry Jell-O with whipped cream
- Double fudge brownies
Third grade teacher Dane Sannicandro said the idea for a campus-wide election was sparked by the students. They had been talking about voting, and making up candidates. Teachers decided to harness their enthusiasm.
“We talked about how we live in a democracy and everyone has a say,” Mr. Sannicandro said.
Every Kindergarten-fourth grade class participated. Kindergarteners made signs. First graders campaigned around the school. Fourth graders wrote persuasive essays and debated the topic. After the students cast ballots, they proudly wore “I Voted!” stickers for the day.
“They did a really good job,” Head of Lower Campus Erin Callaghan said. “And they had fun.”
Students left school on Tuesday with a better understanding of the election process and an appreciation for the power of their vote. And on November 14, they’ll have double fudge brownies for dessert!
