Kathy Perry Expanding Skills @TPRSacademy
June 2018 – Spanish teacher Kathy Perry was one of 18 world language teachers selected for the TPRS Academy teacher training in Jamestown, Rhode Island, over the summer.
"Whether we were preparing meals, having a Tai Chi session to help awaken our brains, observing demonstrations, taking brain breaks, discussing our teaching strategies, or designing lessons, the sense of community helped all of us to take intellectual risks and formulate goals for the upcoming year," Kathy Perry said about the experience.
What is TPRS?
TPRS, or Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling, is a method for teaching world languages. At its core is the idea that language acquisition occurs when the message is comprehensible (language that the listener/reader can understand), repetitive, and compelling (that’s where reading and storytelling come in).
What does TPRS look like in Kathy’s language classroom? She uses vocabulary that the students understand – Comprehensible Input – over and over again.
“If you provide sufficient repetitions, the brain will lay down the language grid,” Kathy explained.
And her classroom is bursting with books, written in Spanish at varying levels, with vocabulary the students can understand and covering topics they are interested in.
