Service Learning News June 2018

June 14, 2018 – Rippowam Cisqua School students reached out to our community in impactful and remarkable ways during this past school year.

Flowers for A-HOME
On Friday, May 18, a group of sixth and seventh grade volunteers spent the afternoon planting flower baskets for A-HOME. Gerry Granelli, A-HOME's Property Manager, led them in the project, and the hanging baskets now adorn the 18 A-HOME residences throughout Northern Westchester. Our students were “doing good” and cultivating green thumbs – all at the same time!

Food for our Hungry Neighbors
On May 16, the Upper Campus community wore dress-down attire and donated to the RCS Breakfast Bag Food Drive. This collection resulted in 354 pounds of boxed milk, Cheerios, and cereal bars, which have already been given out to hungry children and elderly through Feeding Westchester (formerly Food Bank for Westchester).

Our eighth grade visited Feeding Westchester on May 21 to deliver the Breakfast Bag Food Drive collection. While there, the students packed 580 bags of food for hungry school children to address their issues of weekend hunger. Our enthusiastic volunteers also assembled nearly 150 Breakfast Bags with the food that our RCS community so generously donated. This special visit rounded out the eighth grade focus this year on the issue of hunger.

Another Visit to Blythedale
On May 24, one final group of seventh and eighth grade volunteers spent their evening at Blythedale Children's Hospital. This group was the largest yet, with enthusiasm for this volunteer opportunity growing as word spread amongst the students. As on prior visits, the evening was filled with joy and compassion as our RCS students played games with the young patients. This volunteer opportunity continues to prove to be one of the most profoundly impactful of all that we offer to our Upper Campus students – our students having direct contact with the recipient of their kindness and generosity of spirit, and then receiving the same in return.

Completed Planters Given to A-HOME
On June 6, our seventh grade presented A-HOME Property Manager, Gerry Granelli, with the 18 completed wooden planters created under the guidance of Mr. Cameron in the Innovation Center. Mr. Granelli thanked our students for their impressive and hard work and told them that all of what they had done this year for A-HOME has had an extremely positive impact on their residents.

Year-End Service Learning Celebrations

The Service Learning Program wrapped up on both campuses with special celebration assemblies on May 23 on the Lower Campus and on June 6 on the Upper Campus. Mrs. Kallman reviewed and applauded the students for the remarkable things they have done this school year. The assemblies viewed slide shows of the students engaged in their projects, and speakers from Kindergarten through eighth grade shared stories of their service work and the difference it has made in their lives. There is no doubt that, through their kindness and generosity during these past ten months, the RCS students together have made the world around them a better place.
