Service Learning News

March/April 2018  At RCS service learning events, students have been learning more about the concept of philanthropy, what it means to be a good neighbor, and how their acts of kindness and generosity make a difference in the lives of others.
All Lower Campus students participated in a meaningful morning of service learning on Friday, March 16. Our JPK, SPK, and Kindergarten students decorated reusable shopping bags for the patrons of the Community Center of Northern Westchester. The Kindergarten students also sorted and packed for delivery the items from our annual Lower Campus winter food drive. During this same time, our first through fourth graders made beautiful and uplifting get-well cards for the patients at Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH). Some cards even had “pop-up” messages!

On the Upper Campus, our older students also gave of their time, talent, and treasure. Fifth grade students spearheaded a drive for fun items to include in activity bags for children who are at the NWH Emergency Room and decorated bags to be filled with the collected items. Sixth grade students put their artistic talent to work and made cheerful get-well cards to be placed on NWH patient meal trays. At the same time, seventh grade students began work with Mr. Cameron in the Innovation Center to create large wooden planters for the 18 residential homes owned and managed by A-HOME for our neighbors in need in Northern Westchester.

And, on Friday, despite cold and inclement weather, JPK, SPK, and Kindergarten volunteers visited the Community Center and delivered the Lower Campus winter food drive collection to help hungry families in our local towns.

There is no doubt that these acts of kindness have shown our neighbors in the community that RCS students do indeed care!
