All About Night

February 23, 2018 – “Night Party, Night Party,” the Kindergartners chanted as they ran down the hall with their flashlights to begin an evening of culminating activities for their Night Unit.
This unit is truly interdisciplinary in every way. In-house field trips supported the unit, too, as the children met face to face with some nocturnal creatures thanks to the Nature of Things and Owls on the Prowl. In art, the children created their very own life-size creatures out of papier-mâché and actually discovered them in hiding on the night of the party.

The students made constellation viewers and had learned all about the night sky in science so were quick to share their knowledge.

Cormac exclaimed, “A bunch of stars is called a galaxy.”

Briggs shared, “Stars can be blue, yellow, orange, or white.”

And Knox exclaimed, “Humans are nocturnal and diurnal!”

Towards the end of the night, with full bellies from the All Night Diner, we snuggled on my couch and read by flashlight The Boy Who Wouldn’t Go to Bed and other favorites. The students were adept at predictions and making connections, both signs of accomplished readers. But the blazing campfire awaited us in the Sky Room where we gathered in a circle as Ed Cusati 94 led us in singing “Moonshadow.”

Happy, sleepy children headed home feeling it was the best night ever and the adults echoed those feelings exactly!
