Boys Varsity Basketball

January 16 – Ripp’s Upper Campus gymnasiums come alive each winter with basketball.
We offer student athletes 12 sports each year, but throwing hoops is undeniably a favorite for middle school students, where the program is not only about healthy competition but also about teaching the lessons of teamwork and sportsmanship.

At the varsity level, our students are competing in the Fairchester Athletics League and working to take their skills to the next level. With five wins and one loss (at the time of this writing), Coach Gavin Robinson says the team is doing well. The students are developing their ball skills, learning what it means to be a leader, and playing together as a team.

“I want kids to try some things on a basketball court that they have never tried before; try and fail. It’s ok. I’m teaching the kids on the court to make a mistake and then to move forward and help their team win,” Coach Robinson says.

Coaching Spotlight: Gavin Robinson

Varsity basketball coach Gavin Robinson is new this year to RCS, but he isn’t new to basketball – or to athletics. He grew up in Canada playing hockey (he was skating at age 3 and played hockey in college), lots of soccer, lots of rugby, and basketball. Mr. Robinson has coached basketball around the world – in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He’s also a CrossFit trainer. “I’ve been very athletic for a very long time,” he says.

And Gavin Robinson is an educator. He came to RCS this year as a Learning Specialist but has also worn the hat of a teacher, principal, and athletic director.

Coach Robinson describes himself as a very fair and very firm coach who wants to get all the students on the court to play. He says: “It’s about how well the students can grow as human beings, and teaching them what it means to be respectful. I often say it’s how you present yourself. It’s how you get on and off the bus. It’s how you shake your opponent's hand.”

“I’m excited for the year here,” he says. “I’m excited to see where the students started and where they will end.” What does he think about RCS? “I love it!”
