Ready, Set, Design

August 25, 2016 – Members of the RCS faculty spent the day workshopping with RCS Director of Innovation Miles Cameron and creativity consultant and Sparkitivity founder Kathryn Haydon. The topic? Creativity and Innovation.

“Miles and Kathryn knocked it out of the park,” Grades 5-9 History and Writing Workshop Curriculum Facilitator and ninth grade teacher Amy Stern said. “Teachers walked out of the room with a clear understanding of how to make lessons more creative through different types of questions, lessons, and activities that extended far beyond content mastery.”

“Rippowam Cisqua School is committed to supporting faculty development,” said Head of School Colm MacMahon. “And I love the fact that we had all grades represented, and so many disciplines. This is the best predictor of a remarkable year.”

The School opened an Imagination Space for students in PreKindergarten-Grade 4 in the fall of 2015; a 2,400-square-foot Innovation Center, opening in September 2017, is the centerpiece of a transformational construction project that began in June 2016 at the middle school.

Mr. MacMahon continued: “Kathryn is someone who inspires me to think differently about schools. We are excited to bring her back to Rippowam Cisqua this fall to speak to parents about the importance of creativity in childhood and education.”

Kathryn Haydon works with educators to deepen critical and creative thinking in the classroom. She designs creative learning experiences for school and individual students; she has written and spoken widely on the topics of creativity, creative learning, and supporting creative, gifted, or other “square peg” students.
